On Fire

I know it is a bit out of the news cycle now but I just thought I would acknowledge some of the many artists who contributed to the relief efforts for the Australian wildfires. Some bands staged benefit concerts and shows, some produced new songs or merch with the proceeds going to relief, and others wrote massive checks. I would also note that all of these bands made more of a contribution than the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos who donated less than what he earns in literally five minutes. Some of the many bands making significant contributions include Metallica, Queen, Nick Cave, blink-182, Elton John, Mac Demarco, and Alice Cooper.

This was the album I went back to listen to when deciding which albums to nominate from my list that I was most impressed with, I forgot how good it was. Her second album is absolutely fantastic and I hope she manages to match this caliber with her next one.

New Library

Radiohead has updated their website to become the Radiohead Library. They have added tons of new content and rare videos and recordings. Also this week each day a member of the band will tell the backstory of some of the content that is being released. A previously rare EP has also been shared on streaming platforms. You can even sign up for a library card and print it out for some reason.

I’d try to write something appropriate but I wouldn’t do better than fellow drummer Dave Grohl of Nirvana: “I still vividly remember my first listen of 2112 when I was young. It was the first time I really listened to a drummer. And since that day, music has never been the same. His power, precision, and composition was incomparable. He was called ‘The Professor’ for a reason: We all learned from him”.

The fourth album from the band Stars, this album was intended to feel cohesive all the way through rather than just a collection of tracks as many albums end up. I think that it accomplishes that goal and each song works together extremely well. The band was so nervous that it would leak that his became on of the first ever albums to be digitally released the day after the album was completed to be fol;owed later by physical CD sales.

I wanted it to be the bottom for this band and my own emotional spectrum in terms of writing.'“ The song "Bixby Canyon Bridge" features many references to writer Jack Kerouac who is Gibbard’s favorite author who has references in some of his other work as well including Lowell, MA and Title Track.

MJ Goes North

Kim Kardashian and Kanye got their 6 year old daughter North one of Michael Jackson’s original jackets at auction valued at around 250k for Christmas. I know what you are thinking but they had the jacket tacked so that it will fit on North who is a huge fan of MJ. I think that this is probably what Michael would have wanted since he was such huge fan of kids.

This album is composed entirely of covers by Willie Nelson of his favorite American Pop Standards from his childhood. Although the album only took ten days to put together it left it’s mark as Nelson’s cover would go on to become the most popular version of many of the songs and one of his most successful albums. For the life of me I can never figure out why more artists don’t release cover albums of their favorite songs.

For the band The Who’s first album in 13 years Pete Townshed wrote a rap that he wanted performed on the album. Luckily frontman Roger Daltrey refused to perform it saying “if I did it, it would be laughable”.

Working in collaboration with James Taylor and Joni Mitchell, her second album was a massive success. As with many folk albums she covered a few classic songs and managed to make them her own. Each track has a timeless quality to it but also has a feeling of the early seventies in which is was born. This was the most successful female album of all time and held that record for over 20 years. She has many more songs that topped the charts but were performed by other artists showcasing her songwriting ability.

A statue of a KKK grand wizard has stood in Tennessee since 1978 is being torn down and possibly replaced by a statue of Dolly Parton. More statues of Dolly is a movement I could get behind. Although with the way things have been going lately this plan will probably be scrapped and they will just make the statue of the racist guy even bigger.

The third album from Bright Eyes is a dark and weird album that jumps all over the place. Rather than doing real interviews in which frontman Conor Oberst explains the album he went in a stranger direction. The album features a skit written by Oberst in which he is interviewed about the album. However much of the content of the fake interview is not true, in fact Oberst has Todd Fink of The Faint acting as Oberst talking during the interview. Having someone else play you doing an interview for an album skit is truly weird but fits in well with the album somehow.

Depp Loves Glove

This sounds like something I would make up, but Johnny Depp is set to produce a musical about Michael Jackson; told from the point of view of his glove. The musical will be based on the play For the Love of Glove: An Unauthorized Musical Fable About the Life of Michael Jackson, as Told by His Glove. I can’t conceive of a way that this could possibly backfire.

This album is partially the result of her break up with musician Nick Cave who was struggling with drug addiction at the time. Her darkest and most experimental album that interestingly you can hear the other side of on his album The Boatman’s Call.

Beck Goes Clear

Artist Beck has announced that he no longer is a Scientologist, so it sounds like he can finally go clear. He downplayed his involvement with the movement by saying that his father was a Scientologist and he was never really involved. But that sounds tenuous given Scientology’s efforts to court celebrities and the fact that Beck’s ex-wife was also a Scientologist as well. I wonder if we will see some leaks and rumors swirl around Beck in the next few weeks as Scientology has been known to blackmail people to keep them loyal, allegedly.

Bringing Down The Horse - The Wallflowers (1996)

Lead by Jakob Dylan, son of Bob Dylan, this is the second album by The Wallflowers, but with three personnel changes from their fist record, basically a brand new band. Due to the long gap between albums, songs for the album were written over a five year long period by Dylan. The song “I Wish I Felt Nothing” was written about guitarist Leo Leblanc about his battle with cancer, which he would lose shortly after the album’s release. The album is dedicated to his memory and he is featured heavily on the album.

Taylored Music

I mentioned this a few weeks ago when Taylor made public that she was not happy with her discography being acquired by Scooter Braun (closely associated with Kanye who she hates). It looks like things have continued to deteriorate since then as they have restricted how she can play and use her own music. It is a sad state of affairs when music at any level is traded as a commodity instead of being enjoyed by a community.

Ozzy Keeps Going

Ozzy Ozzbourne is releasing a new album, because even though musicians seem to be dying literally every week he is the least healthy of all of them but is somehow immortal. He seemed on death’s door and couldn’t talk like 30 years ago but is still kicking and releasing music. Definitely made some sort of deal with the devil.

A debut album released at the start of the 90’s that I think helped to shape what would become the sound of the 90’s. This album began an era of rock music with gravel and melancholy in strong vocals that would be often imitated but seldom matched. The album wasn’t an immediate success and took over a year to climb to the top of the charts since the band couldn’t hire any Instagram influencers to help the songs get more impressions. Most of the songs were instrumentals that Vedder wrote lyrics for afterwards, his explanation of the lyrics on the album: "All I really believe in is this fucking moment, like right now. And that, actually, is what the whole album talks about."

Iggy Pop, in a recent interview, when asked if he was surprised he was still alive revealed that he once stuck his tongue in a light socket and once tried smoking spider webs to get high. He said he wasn’t surprised he is still alive though, but I certainly am.

Springsteen’s only double album was also his first to go to number 1 on the charts, back when that meant something tangible. This album has a series of songs sung from the perspective of people beaten down by the American dream. It is his channeling of the plight of the American worker into catchy and misleadingly upbeat songs with more somber meanings that is the true genius behind Springsteen’s work. His manifestation of the anxiety and challenges faced by the average person trying to keep their families together in a society that wears down their spirit that makes his music so relatable. Even though he never worked in a factory himself, he does an incredible job making music around the stories of his friends and family growing up.

Blink and you’ll miss the UFO

Tom DeLonge, former guitarist of blink-182 and frontman of Angels and Airwaves, has shifted his focus away from music and toward his real passion; Aliens. After leaving blink 3 years ago he has redoubled his efforts to find UFOs including being on a couple of those History Channel shows that come on at like 3AM. His To The Stars Academy has apparently signed a deal with the US Navy to help them investigate UFO sightings.

40 years ago this week Prince released his second album, named after himself. He was only 20 years old at the time but didn’t seem to lack any confidence as the album is so clearly a raw version of him. This album holds up incredibly well, it is sad that Prince himself couldn’t hold up as long. The was written, arranged, composed, produced and performed entirely by Prince. Like Prince was working on this group project by himself and got a perfect score. Can you imagine creating an entire album by yourself and playing every instrument? Howard Stern once asked Dave Grohl about Prince: "Do you think Prince is a better musician than you?" Grohl replied, "Dude, Prince is a better DRUMMER than I am."

Celebrity Skin- Hole (1998)

This was Hole’s most popular album and their attempt at capturing a California sound after relocating their from the UK for most of the nine month recording session. Not everything went smoothly as the drummer for the band quit after the band brought in a session drummer to play some of the pieces as their producer and drummer didn’t get along. Billy Crogan of the Smashing Pumpkins also was in studio for twelve days to help the band after initially being considered as the executive producer for the album. Unsurprisingly he was a bit weird and smug as he acted like "a math teacher who wouldn't give you the answers but was making you solve the problems yourself". Everyone remembers how fun those teachers were to have around; purposely withholding.
