Starting out the 90’s with a bang, the band decided to name their seventh album Violator as the most heavy metal album title they could think of. That is where the metal ends though, as most of the album started out with sparse demos that were loosely collected and many of them just with simple guitar backing. The band wanted to try doing less in pre-production than they had in the past and give themselves more freedom to create when they were in the studio. The extremely memorable beats behind the songs came in later and brought the album together to give it a cohesive feel throughout.

Halftime

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira have been selected to preform at the Super Bowl halftime show this year. Normally this is something that I would poke fun at but it is pretty clear they have been moving the halftime show more toward something you watch while you talk to your friends and family rather than something you actually listen to. I think the NFL would prefer microphone issues and wardrobe malfunctions everyone is talking about the next day than a legendary musical performance.

Vegan?, You Hadn’t Mentioned it

There is a new entry for worst tattoo in music by Moby, who I will always remember for his episode of Cribs which for some reason is stuck in my head; I know the floorplan of his house from the year 2000 but I can’t remember the names of most of my high school teachers. He decided to get a massive neck tattoo that say ‘VEGAN FOR LIFE”, which I’m guessing that just about everyone he’s come in contact with already knows, I have a feeling he mentions it from time to time. Not to be ageist but if you are completely bald and your beard is grey you may have missed the boat on neck tats.

For their fourth album the Arctic Monkeys decided to create something more poppy and less dark than their previous work. They accomplished this by recording most of the tracks live and focusing on getting used to playing them together. They spent less time in the editing room than usual and were left with a more accessible version their music that doesn’t feel compromised. Suck it and See is one of the most ridiculous album names I can think of, but apparently the Arctic Monkeys can top it, other names they considered for the album; including The Rain-Shaped Shimmer Trap, The Thunder-Suckle Fuzz Canyon, and The Blond-O-Sonic Rape Alarm.

Bruce Springsteen narrowly missed his EGOT when he missed out on an Emmy for his new Netflix show lost the spot he was nominated for to Carpool Karaoke. Give my man his Emmy already, this was his third nomination for an Emmy. Is it too much to ask that Bruce Springsteen win an Emmy and start wearing a massive gold EGOT necklace like Tracy Jordan?

Although deciding to answer nearly every question in interviews with either evasive or sarcastic responses leaves me with little to say about the band here aside from the fact that you should give this album a try.

Some Reasons to Be Cheerful

David Byrne of the Talking Heads has decided to create a new magazine and website focused on uplifting news called Reasons to be Cheerful. He said that he was getting depressed with the constant stream of bad news in the papers and wanted to give people a place to read news that was optimistic and focused on solutions. The non-profit site already has some articles available some penned by Byrne himself.

Neil Young released two live albums to end the 70’s Rust Never Sleeps and Live Rust. He had both his concerts and the LP split between acoustic and electric songs. He was making a case for the timelessness of music as he faced the beginning of the 80’s and saw new trends in music pulling away from the music he had known. These rust albums, which actually got their namesake from a commercial campaign “Rust Never Sleeps” as was suggested to Neil when he was collaborating with Devo and expressing these thoughts. Two versions of this live album from San Francisco act as time capsule into a time when music was about to undergo some major changes and one of the old guards from the Woodstock era paid tribute to what had come before.

Foster the Conspiracy

Foster the People took to social media to stir up conspiracy theories over Billionaire pedophile and child trafficker for the rich and famous Jeffery Epstein’s recent alleged suicide. The band went as far as posting pictures of the body in comparison to other pictures of Epstein claiming the body to be fake. I am so here for this conspiracy and am looking forward so much to the Netflix or HBO series in 5 years that will come out.

It took writing a song for a movie to revitalize the band as they wrote Iris to correspond to the plot in the movie City of Angels about the protagonist “giving up his own mortality just to feel something”. The fans who thought the band had soldout with the release of Name were about to be blown away with the band’s sixth album having five legitimate hits.

Kid Rock decided to lash out against Taylor Swift this week, nearly a year after his failed attempt to get to political office, Taylor supporting a pro-LGBTQ person for office set him off on Twitter; “Taylor Swift wants to be a democrat because she wants to be in movies….period, And it looks like she will suck the door knob off Hollyweird to get there. Oldest move in the book. Good luck girl.” It is interesting that he should accuse her of being inauthentic, considering Kid Rock constantly pushes the narrative that he is a Blue Collar guy from Detroit despite growing up with a private tennis court on his parents estate well outside the city. It would seem that if anyone was using politics to try to boost their career it would be Kid Rock and his failed run for office a year ago. Maybe the guy who stole Werewolves of London, combined it with Sweet Home Alabama, and proceeded to rhyme “things” with “things” shouldn’t be the authority on authenticity and hard work to rise up in the industry.

Man Who Fell

David Bowie’s 1976 film The Man Who Fell to Earth is being remade into a TV Series for CBS All Access. CBS All Access is definitely the best spot for remaking some of Bowie’s work with their other classic successful series and people knowing that CBS All Access is a thing. The good thing it has going for it is that no one has ever made a bad attempt to grab money from a recently departed star’s estate by exploiting all the things he was associated with. This certainly won’t be a disappointment or embarrassment. I’m sure they will find someone better than Bowie to play an Alien landed on earth.

Tickets Scam

Live Nation has admitted that they have been releasing tickets directly to the re-sale market for inflated prices for bands like Metallica. If you remember Metallica was also at the forefront of the fight against Napster, they really are not interested in having fans that don’t contribute directly to their bottom line. So in addition to Live Nation finding a way outside of their bullshit fees for processing a simple payment transaction there is also a new tax on ticket sales in Columbus which is going to add on 5% to your price soon.

Don’t Call it a Comeback

A few months ago I wrote about how Ryan Adams had been accused of psychological abuse by multiple women he had dated including artist Phoebe Bridgers and ex-wife Mandy Moore. Since then he has also been investigated by the FBI related to a relationship with an underage fan and inappropriate messages he sent to her. He cancelled or rather was forced to cancel his upcoming tour and album, but it looks like he is sick of being in purgatory. He posted a few times about his comeback and how he felt the accusations against him were lies. Posting cryptic claims of innocence such as “Because the truth matters. I know who I am. What I am. It’s time people know. Past time. All the beauty in life cannot be reduced to rubble for lies. This madness. My work was a map for the lost. Not a billboard. So soon”. But a leaked text message implies that his true feelings are darker than what he has been posting online “I want my career back. I want a professional to handle it. And I want to work and move on,” he writes. “I’m not interested in this healing crap. I want a plan and I want to work. That’s it”. Doesn’t seem like someone who is innocent or who has evaluated his behavior. This text message he sent to his manager caused them to quit, which says more than a public statement from Adams ever could.

Taking on the issues of online dating and hosting a cast of characters throughout this album feels more like a play at times telling a story. Cameron himself notes that "I write about the outlier, the table-for-one guy, the guy whose life is a constellation of microscopic tragedies. Failure has been under-explored in music. My characters come from a place where ambition, crippling self-doubt and tragedy intersect." This album has lead him to collaborating with Brandon Flowers of The Killers as a co-writer on five of their songs on Wonderful, Wonderful.

Using the same producer as Green Day’s Dookie this album has the same feeling of a Punk classic breaking its way into mainstream. Breaking into the mainstream is always a challenge for Punk bands as they are then often shunned by some of their biggest fans for being too Pop. This was the first album to feature Travis Barker on drums as the difficult tour schedule and an abuse issue forced the band to kick out their former drummer as he was dropping the sticks multiple times in some shows. Barker managed to learn 20 songs less than two hours before their first show as a band and would soon be part of their biggest album.

Shattered Digits

Franz Ferdinand (the band) hit some struggles during their tour this week when an “ugly piece of art” fell off the wall and smashed their drummer’s finger causing him to have to leave the tour. The band blamed the hotel who forced them to wait in the lobby for hours as they had given their rooms booked months prior away to the Moroccan royal family. Adding injury to insult of extremely bad hotel customer service is nothing anyone should have to deal with.

Although the name of the band is a little misleading because Kristian Matsson is not actually the tallest man on earth. This album is a great Scandinavian take on a Bob Dylan style album where the comparisons between the two artists are impossible to avoid, but still has its own identity. This whimsical and often nonsensical folk album is a treat and would fit in almost any era giving it a timeless feel.

Swift Exit

Taylor Swift is mad that her record label sold all her old music to Scooter Braun’s agency without giving her a chance to purchase the rights back herself. The bigger problem for Taylor appears to be with Scooter, who is best known for representing Justin Bieber and Kayne. Her feud with Kanye still has her upset and she isn’t eager to have his friend and on and off again manager owning her music. “Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it,” she wrote. “Or when his client, Kanye West, organised a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.” Swift does choose to omit the part about her lying, which led to the recording being released, but it is understandable that you wouldn’t want your life’s work to be in the hands of someone who goes by Scooter.

Bringing atmosphere and whimsy the opening four songs of this album following the leading character Yoshimi, who is named after the singer doing the screaming on Yoshimi Versus the Pink Robots, Pt. 2. Frontman Wayne Coyne painted the cover art himself, bringing his vision of the pink robots to life in detail. His vision of this world and experience so different from our own is probably what gives this album its lasting appeal and led to it being the band’s most successful.

Jacked Up

Jack White has been banning phones at his concerts for over a year, getting rid of the idiots who choose to record the entire concert on their phones with terrible audio quality and blocking the view of the people behind them with their bright screen. But this week he revealed that he doesn’t own a cell phone himself and has never had one. He thinks it allows him to live more in the moment. I don’t think that is quite the same if you can have assistants as it would be for a normal person to try to quit using a cell phone. I guess you would at least not wonder why no one was texting you to hang out.

Inspired and influenced by the music of Patti Smith, this album is intentionally bare and honest completely through. So much so that the lead singer Natasha Khan decided to be naked and without makeup on the album’s cover. The stripped down sound accentuates the power of her voice. This album is the culmination of years of work as Natasha suffered from severe writer’s block and she reached out to Radiohead’s Thom Yorke for advice on how to begin writing again. His advice was to instead focus on other creative outlets and the writing would eventually come back to her. So she signed up for children’s drawing and art classes as well as dance classes. The new creative outlets did the trick and produced a powerful album.

Vedder Than Walking

Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam mentioned an anecdote from 1992 when he met with a fan of their opener in Amsterdam and ended up talking with her at a cafe until 3AM until she gave him a ride back to his hotel on her brother’s bike. He mentioned the story during a set in Amsterdam and a reporter was able to find her and they met up almost 27 years later in person.

This album released nearly a dozen years since her previous album represented a comeback after a decade of troubles. After breaking up with Mick Jagger in 1970 and losing custody of her son, she got stuck in a self destructive cycle. Suffering from a heroin addiction and homelessness on the streets of London, her voice and career would never be the same. Due to drugs, cigarettes, and a severe case of laryngitis her comeback record left her with a much deeper voice prone to cracking. A constant reminder of the addictions she was trying to overcome. The album’s success gave her the base to get back on her feet, and continue her life and career.

New Country

Country singer Ty Herndon in honor of Pride Month has re-released his 1995 number one hit to replace the gender pronouns from being a song about a girl, to being a song about a boy. He said it always bothered him that he couldn’t truly sing the song about the person he wrote it about. After coming out in 2014, he wanted to share his experience with others, "When I go and speak to kids, I hear this all the time. They're like — especially the LGBT kids — 'We really want to like country music, but we don't think country music likes us.'".

This is a type of concept album, stemming from Ezra Furman’s coming out as queer and gender fluid. “The narrative thread is I’m in love with an angel, and a government is after us, and we have to leave home because angels are illegal, as is harbouring angels. The term ‘transangelic’ refers to the fact people become angels because they grow wings. They have an operation, and they’re transformed. And it causes panic because some people think it’s contagious, or it should just be outlawed. The album still works without the back story, though. What’s essential is the mood — paranoid, authoritarian, the way certain people are stigmatized. It’s a theme in American life right now, and other so-called democracies.”

Rotten Apples

Apple has announced they plan to get rid of iTunes in a move to break off the once ubiquitous program into separate parts. There is no word yet on whether you will still be able to constantly be prompted to update the new service every time you turn on your computer or whether that feature will also be retired. It is yet another move toward no one actually owning their music anymore as you become more and more reliant on streaming music and making sure as little of that money as possible makes its way back to the artists.

The only Springsteen album that didn’t have a follow up tour due to it’s more somber nature is still one of his best received works. Many of the stories told in the songs are based on true stories as Springsteen was inspired by Howard Zinn’s book A People’s History of the United States, which is a great place to start for inspiration. Tales of blue collar workers trying to make their way in America, and the challenges they face.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Weezer’s Scott Shriner, and Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, took some time this month to talk about mental health and things they wish they could have told themselves when they were younger and struggling. Shriner said; “find something that you really enjoy and just work really hard at it and know that you’re not alone and that you’re not always going to feel that way…. If I knew then how I would turn out now, I probably could’ve relaxed a little bit … Find some of the weirdos like you to talk to”. Wentz spoke eloquently “One of the things I would have told myself 10 years ago or 20 years ago is that it’s alright to feel that anxiety and it’s alright to feel down, but you’ve gotta know that tomorrow might have a different feeling. I think you’re not really alone because people are all feeling that — feeling great and feeling terrible. Life is a journey, and I think it’s important not to just slap a smile on your face when you’re feeling down … It’s also important to know that you can reach out to people. Sometimes you start feeling like, ‘Ah, I’m feeling down, and I’ll just keep it to myself.’ I think it’s important to reach out to your friends. And if you notice one of your friends feeling down and it’s something you can’t handle yourself, you should reach out to someone who can help them.”
