On Fire
I know it is a bit out of the news cycle now but I just thought I would acknowledge some of the many artists who contributed to the relief efforts for the Australian wildfires. Some bands staged benefit concerts and shows, some produced new songs or merch with the proceeds going to relief, and others wrote massive checks. I would also note that all of these bands made more of a contribution than the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos who donated less than what he earns in literally five minutes. Some of the many bands making significant contributions include Metallica, Queen, Nick Cave, blink-182, Elton John, Mac Demarco, and Alice Cooper.
Album of The Week
Sara McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (1994)
“The night is my companion
And solitude my guide
Would I spend forever here
And not be satisfied”
“So just let me try and I will be good to you
Just let me try and I will be there for you”
This album was released after Sarah had already began to feel success in her native Canada but was her first album to really build her internationally and particularly in the US. Just four years later she would found the Lilith Fair; a music festival that encourages and features female musicians and collaborations between them.
Beaten Down
“Your big ol’ heart takes a lot on
Shoulders the world
It takes a lot to unfold”
Helpless
“With dream, comfort, memory to spare
And in my mind, I still need a place to go
All my changes were there”
Rich Girl
“You’re a rich girl, and you’ve gone too far
Cause you know it don’t matter anyway
You can rely on the old man’s money”
Sunday Bloody Sunday
“I can’t believe the news today
Oh, I can’t close my eyes and make it go away”
