Again

As I feared I am writing again of another talented musician who has died of Coronavirus. John Prine died at the age of 73 after writing countless thoughtful and funny songs that inspired a generation of musicians. I can’t write a proper obit for anyone so I’ll just do my best to share some of their best music.

Please don’t bury me down in that cold, cold ground
No, I’d druther have “em” cut me up
And pass me all around.

Throw my brain in a hurricane
And the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears
If they don’t mind the size.
— John Prine

Album of The Week

John Prine - John Prine (1971)

There’s a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes
— Sam Stone
But your flag decal won’t get you into Heaven anymore
They’re already overcrowded from your dirty little war
Now Jesus don’t like killin’, no matter what the reason’s for
— Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore

John Prine was discovered by Rodger Ebert the movie critic who happened to walk into a Chicago bar where Prine was playing and felt compelled to write a review that would launch the singers’s career. At the time Prine was working as a mailman after getting out of the army. Most of the songs on this album were part of that original set that inspired Ebert to write his review.
