I wish that musicians would stop being scumbags so I could write about fun stuff but instead here I am with another week focused on R. Kelly, best known for believing he can fly past the criminal justice system and create a sex cult with underage girls. He just released a 19 minute song addressing the issue called "I Admit It". This is not a joke I'm making, he released a song that has only ever been matched with OJ's book If I Did It in terms of narcissism so huge that you can't stand people not knowing you did the crime you walked free from. Set aside the fact that I would rather get braces again than listen to a 19 minute R. Kelly song, this thing is extremely insane. In “I Admit,” R. Kelly asks, “What’s the definition of a cult?/What’s the definition of a sex slave?/Go to the dictionary, look it up/Let me know I’ll be here waiting.” look it up. Did you get back from dictionary.com fast enough to know that grooming a 14 year old girl to be your sex "pet" as a 51 year old fits nicely with that definition? Just ten days after the birth of his daughter Offset was arrested after allegedly making an illegal lane change on the highway. Officers found less than an ounce of weed and a weapon in the car, which may cause some legal trouble for the ex-felon. He should be able to avoid some charges with some good lawyers which he can probably spend some of the over 100k in cash that was found in his car by police. 

Rapper 6ix9ine was robbed, pistol whipped, and kidnapped and gave an interview this week about the experience. He seems to believe that someone in his inner circle set him up to be robbed of the over 800k in jewelry he was wearing. He said he thought that he was going to be murdered so he gave into the kidnappers demands and is now re-evaluating the people he keeps around him and how he is living his life. He mentioned following 21 Savage's example, who has given up jewelry and has been donating hundreds of thousands to causes close to his heart.

New information has come out about who killed Tupac after the Mike Tyson fight at the MGM in 1996. Keef D has confessed on camera to being a passenger in the car and that his nephew Orlando Anderson was the shooter, he died two years later in a shootout in a parking garage over a dispute about money. He had motive because Tupac had allegedly assaulted him two hours prior. There are conflicting reports however, including the linked article (shown below) I was shown to click on next after I read the details of this confession to post here.

Pretty impossible to tell which is more likely, the police were incompetent in gaining confessions from people who were bragging about the crime to their friends and getting them to turn on each other, or Tupac was posting selfies in 2011 to YouTube as this other article claims and faked his own death to avoid a life of money, respect, and success.

Speaking of criminal cases that feel like they never end, Chris Brown was arrested after a show in Florida for previously having assaulted a photographer. He posted what is most definitely a fair and meaningful bail for a serial assaulter who is insanely rich of $2,000.

I've written several times on here about rapper XXXTentacion and his history of assaulting, abusing, and threatening women. He mercilessly beat his pregnant girlfriend, threatening to kill her, their unborn child, and her family. Last week he was killed in a robbery while he was driving. His death has lead to his music breaking streaming records on Spotify. Meanwhile his ex has been trying to raise money for reconstructive eye surgery as he had fractured her cheek bone in several spots and she is facing potentially permanent blindness in that eye. His legacy and his end was one of violence, his music an afterthought.

It looks like I was right, the beef between Drake and Pusha T is over, with no response back from Drake after Pusha released a scathing track accusing him of neglecting a secret child he had with a Pornstar. I think this is probably because Drake is a Raptors fan so he is used on getting dunked on and taking an "L" in public, then trying to befriend the guy who clowned him afterwards. Credit has been given to Drake's mentor J. Prince, CEO of Rap-A-Lot Records, for talking him out of retaliating and squashing the conflict. Drake allegedly had a song ready to "end" Pusha T and Kanye's careers, that seems doubtful because Kanye has been trying really hard lately to end his own career and has been unsuccessful.

Of course Kanye releases an album whose cover reads "I hate being Bi-Polar its awesome", one week after I am writing about Mental Health Awareness in music. Rather than expound on that, I'll just update you all on the feud between Pusha T and Drake which has escalated to say the least. Pusha T release a song accusing Drake of neglecting his child that he allegedly had with a Pornstar.  He also released an old photo of Drake that has him wearing blackface, which caused Drake to have to defend the photo and provide context and an apology. Pretty much everyone has been getting dragged into it with rumors that A$AP Rocky told Pusha T about it because A$AP used to date her. A$AP Rocky was pretty emphatic in his denial with the only part I can quote here being "RIDIN HARRY POTTER STICK 2 FIND DA SNITCH". Everyone is waiting to see what Drake does in response, most likely he will release a less venomous song that gets higher on the charts and then he will go on tour.

I normally try to avoid writing about rap beef's that are clearly publicity stunts, but Drake has released to diss songs aimed at and in direct response to Pusha T's jabs at him on his new album. In addition to multiple songs sniping at each other, Drake also claimed he wanted compensation for helping boost awareness for Pusha's new album including sending him an invoice on Instagram for $100k “For professional services rendered re: promotional assistance and career reviving.”

Brockhampton has kicked out a member of their group this week after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced about him. The group issued a statement and has distanced themselves from him and appears to have sided with his accusers rather than siding with him out of loyalty and trying to discredit the accusers which seams to be more the norm. This is in stark contrast to R. Kelly who this week was seen in a video making a toast and referencing the social media movement to get him kicked out of the music industry for creating a sex cult full of underage girls that he has manipulated and abused. In the new video he says "They should have did this shit 30 years ago", he also says that with people still supporting him that he isn't going anywhere. Unfortunately, both those things are true, until people do something to take action against these disgusting men in power they will remain there.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Last week rapper Lil Xan keyed his own car, then made a YouTube video explaining that he is mentally ill and wasn't able to stop himself from destroying his own property. He said he feels like a slave to his management who won't let him drive his own car or use it. He says in the video that he knows that people will make fun of him for doing this but he doesn't care because it is his mental illness forcing him to act out in this way about his anger. 

Bryson Tiller opened up about his battle with depression as well, after his wildly successful debut album Trapsoul in 2015 he started to suffer from depression. He accredits it to not being able to handle the negative criticism he faced online. He says that it caused his second album to suffer in both sales and quality because he was in a "dark place... it hindered me from everything you know, my creative process, everything". He says he has been feeling better and hasn't been depressed since 2017 and is looking forward to working on his next album.

1-800-273-8255 is the number for the suicide prevention hotline, that logic chose to use as the title of his song to help raise awareness for mental health resources. His performance at the Grammy's tripled calls to the hotline. In the Netflix series Rapture, the rapper is featured and talks about the challenges he has had with anxiety and stretching himself too thin. I highly recommend watching it, although it heavily features his wife who he has since filed for divorce from which makes it tough to watch.

Mental Health Awareness Month

I decided months ago that I was going to dedicate this platform during May to Mental Health Awareness Month. I was intending for the alternative side to take the brunt of the burden of sending my intended message as Rap music is very shielded and limited on this issue.  That was before Kanye, a person who I enjoy as an artist started to go through what is clearly some sort of trauma that himself and his family are choosing to ignore. He fired his manager who is one of his best friends this week and has been increasingly chaotic in his actions since then. His wife has lashed out against people pointing out his erratic and contradictory behavior as a symptom of mental illness. Honestly, I think that is part of the problem, if Kanye felt comfortable expressing his vulnerability instead of defending it I think he would be in a healthier place. He has made several erratic and confounding moves and statements in a few short days, that are a detriment to his career. He has also posted that he intends to make the plastic surgeon who killed his mother with malpractice the cover of his next album with the title "Love Everyone". I think it is pretty clear what he is struggling with and that he has a support system that has consistently let him down as he had to cancel his tour a year ago due to a reliance on prescriptions and exhaustion. I understand that I am at best a sarcastic person you have talked to a few times about stupid things, but I would like you to reflect on the people who are close to you, is there someone who is sinking? Who once you take a step back it becomes clear that they have been quietly asking for help? Please take a moment to tell the people you love that you care about them, and be there for them, get a step past "good" when you ask how their day went. It may mean much more to them than you realize.

Crazy Week in music as rumors surfaced that someone had bitten Beyoncé in the face after actress Tiffany Haddish told the story but refused to snitch their name. That led to a twitter investigation and culminated in multiple sources confirming that star of "Love and Basketball" Sanaa Lathan was responsible. She denies it, but its been narrowed down to a party backstage while she was trying to talk to Jay-Z with multiple witnesses. Lucky for her Beyoncé isn't really that popular so people probably won't care that she bit her in the face.  

DMX's legal team played two of his songs in court to help sway the judge in his tax evasion case, it doesn't look like the judge was swayed though as he sentenced him to one year in prison. 

In darker news, rapper Fabolous was on video punching his girlfriend's face eight times, knocking out two teeth, and threatening to kill her with a baseball bat, he also threatened to shoot her father and brother. His music will no longer be featured on here and he has been arrested and hopefully he is in prison soon.

Putting the Dead in Deadpool

In a surprising move FX has cancelled plans to create a Deadpool animated series with Donald Glover writing and creating the show. This is unusual because his show Atlanta on their network has been a smash hit and incredibly well received. Maybe they didn't think he had time with being Lando in the next Star Wars movie, his upcoming tour and album as Childish Gambino, and his stand up comedy. Hopefully the show can get picked up somewhere else so his vision can come to life. 

In a similar story about art that could have been Denzel Curry says he is quitting rap indefinitely. Hopefully not forever, it's never the ones you want who decide to take a break from making music.
