Two German men escaped from their retirement home last week to attend a metal festival, which is very metal. They may have set the record for oldest people to ever sneak out to go to a concert after being denied permission to go.

Album of The  Week

Belle and Sebastian -If you're Feeling Sinister (1996)

This album was recorded in just a few days, and only a few months after the bands first album was finished. Stuart Murfoch, the band leader, was eager to get another album out right away. He had been in and out of hospitals for the last seven years with a chronic fatigue disorder. He felt like he had wasted years of his life. A doctor recommended he take some music and photography classes as part of his recovery. Eventually leading to this album and him taking the cover picture for the album. It is a picture of his friend he met in the hospital who had the same condition as him, taken as she wiped the tears from her eyes after being swept up in the emotion of her struggle.

Moshed potato and Beans

A video went viral this week of a metal fan eating cold beans directly from the can in a mosh pit, I'm not sure which I would be less likely to do: be in a mosh pit, or eat cold beans from a can. I suppose the Mad Max scenario where I would have to do both for survival is as likely as me doing either separately.

The Antlers - Hospice (2009)

One of the most sorrowful albums you are likely to find aptly named Hospice, this album takes you through all the stages of grief. This album switches between perspectives as it follows the journey of a young woman dying of cancer in Hospice care from the eyes of her boyfriend and her nurse. This somewhat autobiographical album is tough to listen to all the way through without having a strong emotional response. The most upbeat song on the album is a metaphor for the couple deciding to get an abortion. It doesn't get much darker or more honest than this album.

The Killers - Sam's Town (2006)

Lead singer of Brandon Flowers proclaimed before the album's release that it would be one of the best of the last twenty years. A bold proclamation for the band's second album that managed to actually live up to that declaration. This album delves through the ups and the downs of going back to your home town. The band shied away from using auto-tune which helps to give the album its authentic feel. It's felt in the lyrics, as well with the song Uncle Johnny recounting the real drug addiction his uncle faced, and throughout thoughts on what it means to be home.

Blink of an Eye

Travis Barker the drummer of Blink 182 has had a few weeks off trying to recover from serious blood clot issues. Unfortunately he got in a car accident with a school bus while driving his 14 year old son and is now facing additional health issues after being dazed from the crash.

Neil Young drove a car up to the studio that was a complete piece of trash billowing smoke from the windows as well as the exhaust. He had the cops pull their weapons on him in front of the studio and despite having no license they just let him go and he went on to record the album. He originally intended to only record the song featuring the piano in studio as he had already recorded the rest at his house but it sounded so good he re-recorded it all. After the gold rush was his 3rd album after the success of the Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young successful album Deja Vu.

Mental Health Awareness Month

British singer James Blake took to Twitter to talk about the response he often gets to his songs that have lyrics that are emotionally vulnerable. He says that he often receives a response of "sad boy" whenever he posts a song in which he expresses what would be seen as not masculine emotions. 

“We are already in an epidemic of male depression and suicide. We don’t need any further proof that we have hurt men with our questioning of their need to be vulnerable and open. It is only a good thing to talk about what is on your mind."

Mental Health Awareness Month

Last week a vigil was held, marking the one year anniversary of death by suicide of Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave. His close friend, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, sang Hallelujah at his funeral. On Cornell’s next birthday, Bennington took his own life as well. Mental health is a daily struggle for more people than you would think, a small act of kindness you did yesterday may have meant more to someone than you could ever know.

Mental Health Awareness Month

I am continuing to use this month to promote Mental Health Awareness month. Normally this section is reserved for jokes about music news and fun facts. Unfortunately this week music news and mental health awareness month overlapped. Scott Hutchison the lead singer of Scottish band Frightened Rabbit committed suicide last week at the age of 36. The band was called Frightened Rabbit because that is what his mom used to his mom used to call him as a child because he was so shy. He started the band with his brother, and it grew over the next dozen years. His music has always been open and honest about his struggles and he has even talked about his struggles during interviews. One example of this is the their song Floating on the Forth, whose closing line is "I think I'll save suicide for another year". When asked about the song he said “It’s a real thought. It’s a thought that I’ve taken to a place that I’m far less comfortable with … I’ve gone 90% of the way through that song in real life". Ten years later and unfortunately he was not able to survive his struggle for another year.

Kurt Cobain's tragic suicide is well known, so the part I am going to focus on here is the less well known aspects of his mental health battle. His family had a history of mental illness, with multiple family members committing suicide in violent ways. Mental Health issues commonly run in families and genetics is one of the primary risk factors. Kurt was diagnosed with ADD at a young age and later diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (also known as manic-depression). This is similar to serious clinical depression with the addition of mood swings, which can result in everything from rage to euphoria.  During his manic states Kurt would be incredibly productive, with his depressive states caused him to be characterized as lazy. Bipolar people are much more likely to be addicted to drugs and alcohol as was the case with Kurt as well.  In his suicide note he was suffering with delusional guilt and expressed that he felt like his wife and child would be better off without him in their lives. I recently saw a t-shirt for sale online that had his suicide note on the front of it. It made me extremely upset, that someone would ever think that was an appropriate way to support a band or be edgy. It is disgusting to trivialize the anguish that someone must be feeling to take their own lives. Kurt often said and frequently wrote in his journals "I hate myself and want to die", if you have never had pervasive negative thoughts like that you should count yourself lucky and try to better understand and empathize with people who do. Some people's challenges aren't clearly visible from the outside, things like success with their career, or having a family can't completely erase these thoughts.

Mental Health Awareness Month

This month all of the songs and writing in my posts will be in an effort to bring attention and perspective to Mental Health Awareness month. Of all the illnesses that affect the people you see everyday mental issues are the most misunderstood. The other thing that makes this topic so important is that each person is able to help the people around them to a greater degree than they realize. The impact you can make on someone with cancer is limited but your effort and kindness for someone suffering with mental health issues can literally be the difference between life and death. Just last week Avicii lost his battle with mental health and commited sucide. I've selected songs that are meant to invoke empathy, inspire, and articulate the struggles of mental health issues and addiction.

Elliott Smith had mental health and addiction issues, it is reported that he was smoking up to $1500 dollars of heroin and crack each day. He also was paranoid and believed he was being followed by a white van. However he was starting to turn his life around and gave up all drugs, alcohol, and caffeine. He also was finishing the details on his latest album that was set to release soon. 

He got in an argument with his girlfriend, she claims she locked herself in the bathroom then heard a scream and when she opened the door he had a knife in his chest. It was reported as a suicide based on her testimony and his mental health history. However the autopsy confirmed there were no drugs in his system and was much more consistent with homicide than with murder, including possible defense wounds on his hands and multiple stab wounds in his chest. His girlfriend was never charged and she later sued his family for 15% of his estate claiming that she was entitled to it since they lived together. I think it is very likely that Elliott Smith's murderer got away with the crime based on an improper investigation by the police, allowing his mental health and addiction issues to bias their investigation.

Aladdin Stain

Unfortunately the David Bowie statue that I wrote about a few weeks ago has been vandalized with "Feed the homeless first" and "RIP DB" spray-painted on it.  A Bowie fan has offered 5k to a homeless charity if the perpetrator turns themselves in, which may be a good idea as the person was captured on camera. Apparently this person couldn't find the hundreds of other nearby extravagances to deface and had to ruin a statue, and also cost more money from the government to fix it.

Smashed Pumpkin

Billy Corgan the frontman of Smashing Pumpkins has said recently that "80% for the things that I get held up and mocked for, I'm doing intentionally". I can relate to that, if you are making fun of me the joke is on you not me. Like the time I locked my keys in my car while it was running and locked myself out of the house during a blizzard. My dad made fun of me but the joke was on him, I was doing it intentionally on a level of humor and brilliance he just didn't understand.
